Getting Here
—Caribe Sur—
Playa Chiquita is about 4 hours from San Jose by car. We are located in a rural area about as far as you can go along the Southern Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. There are various ways to arrive and we are here to help you plan every detail of your vacation.
Fly

Sansa Airlines
Sansa Airlines is a regional airline that offers daily flights between Juan Santamaría International Airport in San Jose to the domestic airport in Límon. Sansa normally offers twice daily flights for around $100 and the flight time is 30 minutes. There are limits on weight and luggage, so if you are a heavy packer you’ll pay premium prices. Upon arriving in Limon you then come the duration of the trip in private taxi or shuttle which we are happy to arrange for you.
Drive

Route 32
Rent a car in San Jose and drive! Driving in Costa Rica requires two things, GPS and patience. That being said, the drive between San Jose and Puerto Viejo is drive unlike any other. The famous Route 32 is part of the Pan American Highway that runs directly through Braulio Carrillo National Park. It is not uncommon to encounter thick clouds and rain in the pass, but if you do get lucky it's a beautiful drive through virgin jungle scenes, amazing views, and numerous waterfalls as you negotiate curves, fog, occassional construction and a lot of truck traffic.
Shuttle

Caribe Shuttle
Caribe Shuttle and Interbus offer daily shared shuttles between San Jose and Puerto Viejo. Most depart San Jose twice daily, in the early morning and early afternoon. The price per adult is approximately $60, depending on the company and the exact destination, note, some charge for excess luggage. The shuttles are nice, air conditioned, and offer free wifi. You usually make one stop along the way to use the restroom and get a quick bite to eat. We are happy to help you determine which of the shared shuttle companies works best for your budget and itinerary.
Taxi

Private Taxi
Private taxis are an option, as well. If you hire one at the airport, expect to pay between $250 and $350 each way. Be very cautious that the vehicle is in sound order and that the driver is aware you are going to Puerto Viejo de Limon, NOT Puerto Viejo de Sarapique.
If you’re considering a private driver, please arrange with us in advance and we will find you a trusted ride. We like to support the local fishermen, several of whom own 12-15 passenger vans. The extra room will assure you a comfortable trip over– sleep, stretch out, stop for snacks, etc. They will not charge extra for luggage, and they will pick you up as you exit customs and deliver you straight to our door anytime of day or night. The cost is $250 (for up to 6 people), and in my opinion, worth the peace of mind. Besides, being locals, by the time you arrive, not only will you have insider’s knowledge, but you’ll have a friend in town from one of the oldest families!
